Rising from the North Shore of Lake Union, Gasworks park is a Seattle Icon. Opened to the public in 1975, the park design incorporates the remnants of the coal gasification plant that operated on the site until 1956. The main towers serve as an unaccessible relic to a time past while some of the other piping and machinery has been painted and reused as part of the "play barn". On the west side of the park, "the Mound" rises above the park providing an excellent place for flying kites. Atop the Mound, an artistic sundial tracks the seasons. Gasworks is a favorite for picnics, photos and sports. Whether you want to gather some friends or stroll alone, Gasworks is an ideal spot to escape the hustle and bustle without traveling far. #seattle #travel #outdoors #parks #gasworks #gasworkspark #urban #urbandecay #reclaimed #nature #factory #ruins #city #lakeunion #waterfront #hiking #walk #picnic #industrial #seattlebucketlist #parksandrec #wallingford #explore #urbanexploration
